Following a slight delay, Beta 2 has now launched. I have recorded my experiences in upgrading to Beta 2, and first impressions. This post may also be helpful for anyone else trying to install the Beta 2. Please let me know if you have any problems.
UPDATES BELOW [Includes information on how to upgrade]:
01:07 [UK time: 01/10/14]: Apparently, we need the new launcher installed to be ready for the Beta 2 launch. Go to your download page, and download the latest ‘Client-Installer’ file. Run it and follow instructions. When complete, you will have a launcher, version number 0.3.1395.0 (number is at bottom right of launcher). This is just the launcher, not Beta 2. I will let you know when I can download Beta 2.
01:17 [UK time: 01/10/14]: This might be a good moment to inform readers that a ‘full-wipe’ is planned for the Beta 2 launch. This will mean we will all be back to a Sidewinder and 1,000 credits, but may or may not mean all statistics for your character are wiped.
01:22 [UK time: 01/10/14]: My Elite: Dangerous is now updating! Once you have installed the new launcher (see above, 01:07), you should get the big red ‘Upgrade’ button at the bottom right of the launcher window…click it! (And wait for a, probably, very long update, as the servers start to melt.) If you do not get the ‘Update’ button, click on your email address at the top of the launcher, then click ‘Check for Game Updates’. If this still doesn’t get you the ‘Update’ option, close and re-open the launcher.
01:32 [UK time: 01/10/14]: Elite Forums down for me. Don’t panic! Upgrade is still downloading via launcher 🙂
01:36 [UK time: 01/10/14]: Launch confirmed on Elite Forums (which are now, obviously, back up). Here is a very long list of new features/content to read, while you wait for your upgrade to finish 😉
02:28 [UK time: 01/10/14]: My upgrade progress bar is at about 20% (after nearly an hour), so looks like this could take a while, for me at least. I am reading on the forums that some have successfully upgraded and had a quick look around. Generally good feedback so far, with some complaints about the ‘sky-box’ being a bit crazy (the sky-box is the 3-D background against which the stars, etc. are drawn). Not sure if the sky-box thing is an occasional glitch, or permanent, for those reporting it.
04:00 [UK time: 01/10/14]: Quite a few varied crashes and glitches being reported, but these may be relatively rare. No Beta upgrade of this size will be problem free. If you are able to run the Beta 2, but have serious issues, do not lose heart! Frontier are usually very quick to patch the most serious bugs, so if the game is unplayable for you right now, you might be best to wait for a day or so and apply the new updates as they are released, then try again.
04:05 [UK time: 01/10/14]: I am only at about 33% download, and need to go to bed soon (nearly midnight, local time). I will leave my PC on, and check functionality tomorrow evening, with a more detailed review to follow, this weekend. Meanwhile, I wish good luck to all who venture forth into the new Beta 2 galaxy. Please leave comments and questions re. Beta 2 (click ‘leave a comment’ at the top of this post – no email or registration required).
01:05 [UK time: 02/10/14]: So… apparently we are on to 2.02 already. The upgrade from 2.0 took only a few seconds. Logged in to ‘solo’ mode, at 2nd time of asking, and had a quick look around, without flying. The graphical improvements are obvious (screenshots below), and some new features are immediately obvious. I particularly like the schematic system map. Hoping to actually fly somewhere on Friday!
03:54 [UK time: 02/10/14]: I managed to get a 1/2 hour of flying in ‘solo’ mode. I ran a courier mission to Freeport, from the orbital I was first introduced at. I also traded 4 units of wine to Freeport. Made about 3,000 credits in my first trip in Beta 2! It looks quite different. The most striking change is the diversity and quality of the planet textures. There are many new features and designs to the menus, huds, ship info. panels and other aspects of the graphic design. The good news is, though, for me, it seemed an amazingly bug free first flight. I do seem to get a hang on quitting the game, which means I need to kill the process. I also noticed heavy lag when scrolling into the middle of the star map (which my graphics card and machine in general should avoid with ease). For now, however, it’s a big thumbs up from me! There seems lots of new stuff to explore and play with, and I am looking forward to a weekend of surprises. I will leave you with a view from the landing pad of an orbital outpost 🙂
15:28 [UK time: 03/10/14]: Version 2.03 released. My father said his (small) credit balance was reset to zero after upgrading to 2.03, but my 3,748 credits are still intact, so I guess he hit a bug at upgrade.
06:16 [UK time: 04/10/14]: Version 2.04 was released yesterday. I played for a couple of hours (solo mode) today, and can report a completely bug-free experience so far… which is, quite frankly, amazing! I managed to grab, and then sell, some exploration data too, using the scanner thingy. Not quite sure how, as I wasn’t anywhere remote or special.
